Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club History
- 1882 – the idea of the football club belonged to grammar school boys from the bible class at All Hallows, which were also members of Hotspur Cricket Club. The first name given to the team was Hotspur.
- 1884 – Hotspur football club was renamed in Tottenham Hotspur Football and Athletic Club to distinguish itself from another team called London Hotspur.
- 1885 - took place first game against St. Albans in the London Association Cup. The opponent was defeated with a score 5-2. The colors of the team changed to light blue and white halves.
- 1888 – Tottenham moved to a new ground in Northumberland Park left the River Lee.
- 1895 – the club became professional.
- 1896 – The match versus Aston Villa visited a record crowd (about 6,000 people). As a result of the match Spurs were elected to the Southern League Division One.
- 1897 – the team reached Cup Final for the first time, but lost 0-2 to Wellingborough in the local Charity Cup competition.
- 1898 – Charles Roberts appointed to a position of chairman.
- 1899 - Spurs moved to present site, a former market garden. Soon the ground became well-known as White Hart Lane.
- 1900 – the club won the Southern League.
- 1901 – Tottenham won the FA Cup, becoming the only non-League club to do so since the formation of the Football League.
- 1908 – Spurs won promotion to the Second Division of the Football League.
- 1909 – they became runners-up to the First Division.
- 1915 – after the Great War, Tottenham relegated to Second Division.
- 1919 -1920 – won Division Two.
- 1921 – April 23, 1921 – the club became FA Cup champions defeating Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.
- 1922 – after finishing second to Liverpool Spurs was relegated to Second Division.
- 1933 – the team became the Division Two runners-up.
- September 3 , 1939 – Tottenham was seventh in the Second Division. Neville Chamberlain declared war and League Football was abandoned for the “duration”.
- 1949 – Arthur Rowe appointed to a position of manager and created a new style of play – the “push and run”.
- 1950 – as a result the club won promotion to the First Division.
- 1951 – Tottenham Hotspur Football Club became champions of Football League for the first time.
- October 11, 1958 – Spurs winning the game against Everton with a slashing score 10 – 4.
- 1961 – great success for Spurs. They won the FA Cup and became Football League Champions.
- 1962 - got the FA Cup trophy.
- 1963 – the club won the European Cup-Winners’ Cup and became the first British club to win a major European competition.
- 1964 – Bill Nicholson added new players. Among them were: Alan Gilzean, Mike England, Alan Mullery, Terry Venables, Joe Kinnear and Cyril Knowles.
- 1967 – the fifth trophy of FA Cup. The team defeated Chelsea.
- 1971 – Lilywhites became a winners of the Football League Cup. The same success was in 1973.
- 1972 – gained a victory in UEFA Cup.
- 1974 - Tottenham Hotspur became the First English club to have played in three major European finals. Terry Neill took over a post of manager.
- 1976 – Keith Burkinshaw became a new manager of the club.
- 1977 – unfortunately, the team was relegated to the Second Division.
- 1978 – Keith Burkinshaw improved the team by signing two stars Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricardo Villa. They gained the promotion.
- 1980 – the club defeated Manchester City, 3-2.
- 1981 – Lilywhites won the FA Cup for the six time.
- 1982 – the seventh victory in FA Cup.
- 1984 - Steve Archibald, Garth Crooks, Glenn Hoddle, Osvaldo Ardiles, and Steve Perryman led the club to the winning of UEFA Cup.
- 1987 - Spurs became a runners-up of FA Cup Final. The new club record with 49 goals in a single season was established by Clive Allen.
- 1990 - two new players appeared in the club: Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker.
- 1991 – the team won FA Cup.
- 1992 – Paul Gascoigne joined Lazio for a record amount of £5.5 million.
- 1993 – Ossie Ardiles appointed to the position of a manager. He employed the Famous Five that consisted of: Teddy Sheringham, Klinsmann, Nick Barmby, Darren Anderton and Dumitrescu.
- 1994 - Tottenham Hotspur condemned to the12 point deduction, a one year FA Cup ban, and a £600,000 fine for making illegal payments to players. Due to protest of Sugar the Cup ban and points deduction were abolished.
- 1995 – a new record of signing. Chris Armstrong was taken from Crystal Palace for £4.5 million.
- 1998 – rebuilding of North Stand was completed. The capacity of the stadium increased to 36,257.
- 1999 – Lilywhites won the League Cup.
- 2000 – Sergei Rebrov was taken to the team for a new record amount of £11million.
- 2001 - Daniel Levy became chairman and Glenn Hoddle a new manager.
- 2002 - the club reached the Worthington Cup, but lost to Blackburn Rovers at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.
- 2003 -the team finished 10th in the Premiership. Jamie Redknapp became a captain. Helder Postiga and Bobby Zamora were signed.
- 2004 – changing in the management structure: Jacques Santini appointed to the position of head coach, Martin Jol as his assistant, Dominique Cuperly as fitness coach and Frank Arnesen as Sporting Director. Tottenham finished only 14th in the Premiership.
- 2005 – 2006 – the final match of the season the club was defeated at West Ham. In spite of this the team gained the place in the UEFA Cup.
- 2006 -2007 - new players were signed: Dimitar Berbatov, Bayer Leverkusen, Didier Zokora, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Pascal Chimbonda and Steed Malbranque. Michael Carrick moved to Manchester United. Puma became a new kit sponsor.
- 2007 – 2008 – for this season Lilywhites announced an all-white kit.
- October 1, 2007 – the club’s 125th anniversary was celebrated by a game against Aston Villa F.C. The result of the match was 4-4.
