But they will be happier with the result because they remain four points ahead of the Gunners as the race for fourth place reaches its climax. Martin Laursen atoned for a dreadful first half miss by scoring a late winner for Aston Villa to maintain their push for a European place. The Denmark international shot over from close range with the goal at his mercy before Olof Mellberg broke the deadlock four minutes before the interval. Jermain Defoe looked to have rescued a point for Spurs when he volleyed home after 79 minutes in only his second league start of the campaign but Laursen had the final say with his fifth goal of the campaign.

Arsenal came back from a goal down to win 3-1 against Tottenham Hotspur in the North London Derby. White Hart Lane erupted on 14 minutes when Gareth Bale hit a dipping free-kick past the sprawling Manuel Almunia. The Gunners probed in an attempt to find an equaliser but were guilty of squandering many clear-cut chances, notably Abou Diaby's miss from 10 yards.

Sunderland's new signing Michael Chopra grabbed an injury time winner to sink Spurs. Chopra, introduced from the bench as a 71st minute replacement for Anthony Stokes, controlled Ross Wallace's right wing cross before slotting beyond Paul Robinson. The Ј5million man had hardly had a sight of goal since his introduction but he was on hand to score the winner to send a 44,000 Stadium of Light crowd home happy.
